A Quiet Afternoon at Igorot Garden

I published an article about The “Baguio” I Miss early on in this blog. It was supposed to let readers know more about the city I knew and loved. It was designed to let you understand where I was coming from. It was a nostalgia piece as I’m sure most of you who no longer live in here have your own memories — memories of rose-coloured days to look back on to make the present a little more bearable, wherever else in the world you may be.

But Baguio Insider is Baguio Today. And for those of us who actually live here, everyday it’s more like –

Baguio, Bars & Booze

Mayor-elect Reinaldo Bautista plans to revive the some aspects of the Administrative Order issued in 2005 by suspended Mayor Braulio Yaranon that limits the sale of liquor as follows:

  1. Retail Stores until 9pm
  2. Bars until 12 mn
  3. Discos until 2am

Bautista lifted the implementation of A.O. 114 last year when he assumed the post of Acting Mayor, saying that a city ordinance is necessary to back up the order.

Prima Donna, Pseudo Brokers and the Folks Who Bug Me

Last week, a friend of mine who owns a ritzy hotel brought over a woman from out-of-town who was looking for a place to stay so she could be away from relatives and review for the bar exams this September. It was mid-May and she knew she was running out of time. Let’s call this bar reviewee Donna.

Was There Ever a Meningococcemia Epidemic in Baguio?

The answer is a resounding NO! I scanned the web for the names and numbers of those who actually died from the disease and found conflicting accounts from 4 to 8 to an exaggerated 25 persons but no names, nothing definite. Then there were reports from our local journalists adding to the scare by reporting large numbers of “suspected” cases. And all for what — so the local government in 2005 could get access to 12,000,000 pesos in calamity funds.

Folks, that was the whole point, don’t you see?
