Cochise Bernabe’s Murderer is Granted Clemency

Cochise Bernabe was murdered 19 years ago this month. And his murderer, Rodolfo Manalili, who was supposed to be serving two life sentences because he masterminded the abduction, torture and killing of Cochise Bernabe and Beebom Castanos on April 25, 2000 has been granted clemency by the President of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as recommended by the Secretary of Justice Raul Gonzales.

Manalili, the man who perpetrated such violence and horror upon two innocent young people who never cause him or his family any harm, has so far only served 17 years in prison.

I loved Cochise. His death is one tragedy I have not been able to get over. Just last month, three of us left behind by him met up at Berks (in front of Mall of Asia) to talk about what really happened in the case. Pok Estrella, Cochise’s best friend and fraternity brother at the Upsilon Sigma Phi (they were both Most Illustrious Fellows), Cochise’s sister, Tina Bernabe-Carbajal and myself. We met up one late afternoon and reminisced about Cochise till late at in the evening.
