“Baguio was not always complacent and mediocre. I think we regressed after the earthquake. Every development was welcome then and that set the tone for unabated “development”. Politicians found anew source of income with unnecessary public infrastructure, the residents lost fire in being pro active in the city’s affairs.”

Lisa, you're so right about this. In our haste to get back on our feet after the earthquake, we lost focus and just rushed into everything. So here we are, for me at least, am asking "wha happen?"

Hi Volataire!

Am looking for something new to write about, something positive, and finding none, am riding it out so we do not turn visitors off. Hahaha!

As for a casino, I am not against it. Everyone can complain how it destroys families -- it's not the casinos that destroy, it's the gamblers.

When Hyatt Casino was still operating before the earthquake, foreign tourists came to Baguio. And yet, Baguio was safe, fun and still wholesome then.

The casino at Poro Point is full of Baguio residents, and that's just 30 minutes away. With the Baguio traffic, a casino in Camp John Hay will be 20 minutes away.

Hahaha. Ok, maybe I have enough points to write about.

Thanks!

you have been listening too long. Time to wake up the people again with your insights. You must be working on something really heavy. For your information, a trial run for the casino was done for ten (10) days at the Camp John Hay, but Sobrepena Bob did not approve of it considering that it is one of the conditionalities imposed by the City and that they took into consideration the flak they may receive as they have not been paying up Baguio's share for the longest time.Heard a lot about the sob stories of Baguio people losing a fortune in their daily forays to the casino in La Union. Kawawa naman sila.Maybe you can write a piece on this.he,he. miss your insights so start writing again. see you and GOD bless you exceeedingly, abundantly!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Edgar,

The funny thing is, EVERYTHING concerns us! Our neighbors family quarrels, the migration of birds, the denudation of forests, the routes others take to go to work -- all these things affect us, more directly than we realize.

So if the city mayor wants to put up 3 more flyovers, granting for the sake of argument there are bottlenecks that need be addressed, he will merely speed up the areas above the bottlenecks and cause new bottlenecks elsewhere.

That's why also crimes are termed "People versus ______" -- because a crime against your brother is a crime against you (as in, you could have been the victim).

So we must be active participants in life, not just bystanders.

Hi Nick, and thanks for the offer!

Right now, all I ask is vigilance, plus an awareness campaign to get the folks to OPENLY protest these goings on in the city.

Letters and phone calls to the mayor and other government politicians -- a hue and cry must be raised, even louder than the protest on the 'cars for the councilors' issue.

These trees are irreplaceable. Of course we can plant in other areas, but the homes and businesses in the denuded areas will have to provide airconditioning soon!

We have allowed too many trees to be felled at Luneta Hill already. ARe we just going to give Henry Sy this property just like that? Considering it is owned by GSIS?

Hi Nick!

Yup, we must be vigilant and go on a personal campaign to awaken the citizenry, too.

Burnham Park must remain public land forever. The local government should maintain it AS A NECESSARY EXPENSE to provide Baguio with a WIDE GREEN OPEN SPACE in the center of town.

Oh Ely,

Instead of feeling hopeless and helpless like you, I was filled with anger and frustration.

Try attending a PAGASA Workshop of Hope and take charge of your future and the future of this country. You'll discover how the recovery process can already begun.

Hi Ted,

And thank you so much for clarifying the intentions behind the new traffic scheme.

I understood immediately the road capacity angle, being from Manila. I explained to folks that there would be a longer route to accommodate more vehicles. It actually benefits taxi drivers, too.

I do have some concerns regarding the approach to Session Road and the bias in favor of SM. Maybe SM should be asked to change the direction of their traffic flow instead.

Please know that everyone climbing Session Road does not want to go to SM, neither those approaching Session Road from Leonard Wood or Upper Session Road. So maybe, as to the latter, you should allow private vehicles to descend Session directly.

Finally, we all know that the CBD is congested because of about 8,500 jeepneys (with only 4,437 legitimate operators by the way)with so many redundant routes allowed to park, wait for passengers and take up all the space in the center of town.

As a traffic engineer, you might want to propose the consolidation of routes, the extension of THEIR routes, on a north-south, east-west and circumferential basis. As a commuter for 27 years, I will be happy to lend you MY expertise on the matter.

Finally, any implementation of such a scheme should be done in June, when 130,000 students go to school daily and not before the summer break when traffic is not regular.

Lisa, I saw that plot of land when it was still bare, and then trees were planted when I was a kid and saw them grow into what it is now. I read in the Midland Courier about this planned "development" of the area. This is one of the pocket areas near the city that must be preserved not only for us, but for our children.

We must take action. Let me know how I can be of help.
