Haunted Baguio: Spirit Quest at Nevada Square Revisited, Part 2

There were of course other paranormal activities reported in the other areas closer to Loakan Road but they were attributed mostly to elementals, like dwarves and other creatures of the earth, who tended to be playful, and would be upset when the gardens they they so loved, protected and lived in would be paved with cement.

The groups broke up into seance groups. Tony assigned Group 1 to the Brewyard dining room, Group 2 to the second level, and Group 3 to the Brewyard kitchen. Tony and the Spirit Questors called the ritual by another name at that time, but they sat around in a circle holding each others’ hands, except for Group 3 that stayed in an area so tight that theu had to form a circle standing up. As I moved around taking photos, I remember thinking, “This sure looks like a seance to me!”

At one point, I was told by Group 3 that it seemed the ones they were in contact with were wary of me. I was moving around trying to get a good angle for photos as they were in such cramped quarters. It seems the beads I was wearing around my neck has something to do with it. I was asked to lend one of the Spirit Questors my antique money beads, because they were talking to a haughty ancestral spirit who refused to communicate with someone of a ‘lower class.’

I do not know what compelled me to wear all my “Igorot beads” on that day, having mixed and matched three strands of different lengths. I am a collector of these antique Italian and African beads that were traded in the Cordillera Highlands and used as currency before it was in vogue to use the paper currency that we are accustomed to in the modern era.

To own a lot of beads, especially those giant chevrons, indicated wealth and stature and that was a ‘trapping’ that the ancient spirit could recognize. It seems she came from a higher class and was not willing to talk to a commoner.

So I lent the “lesser mortal” one of my strands but it seems that single strand was not enough to gain her respect, so I had to hand over the double stranded-necklace, too, which the group was able to put around the Questor’s neck without breaking the chain that their hands made. I believe that they were not allowed at any point to unclasp their hands.

The Group 2, on the second floor was conversing with a female spirit whose legs were cut off by the falling debris and that was a sad, sad, group, and especially since a very sad Marionne Molintas-Ruiz, who had recently lost a young son, was among them. The female spirit felt her pain and was drawn to her.

  1. You really should write a print book soon, dearie…

    Hi Chi,

I would be “finger-tied!” But how sweet of you to think so.

Never aspired to be a writer. you know. My ex-boyfriend, Cochise, who was abducted and murdered in 1990, was one of the more promising writers of his time. I was just thinking, if he were alive, how he would have enjoyed exploring all the different media available today.

Of course, even as a student (he and Butch Dalisay were in the creative writing English program in UP Diliman at the same time) some of his short stories already got published in literary magazines and I remember how excited he was while waiting to see his work in print.

Butch, of course, because he’s WAYYYYY older, and WAYYYYY more talented, already had several awards under his belt by the time he returned to UP to complete his degree.

I, on the other hand, preferred to enroll in English Language subjects, phonology and all that — more detective work than creating. Call it a lack of imagination.

Boy, what a long reply to such a short, albeit complimentary comment! Am in a story-telling mod, you see…

    :)

    Lisa:

Amazing blog! I read that a guy named Cochise was your ex-boyfriend.Was he the one killed in Pampanga? I read the case when I was in law school but I forgot the details. All I remember is that he was a law student.

  4. lisa says:

    Hi Sheryl,

Yes, Cochise was taken to Pampanga and killed there. He and I were classmates, group mates and best buddies in UP Law, too. He was reviewing for the bar when he was abducted. I was to graduate a year later, but never got around to completing my last 17 units. Long story… :)

Thanks for liking the site, hope to see you around. Am about to do a whole series on Sagada, in case folks would find the information useful.

  5. Lalaine Tenorio says:

Hi Lisa, i’ll be waiting for your sagada series. I havn’t been to the place though my husband and I have been making plans to visit for quite some time now but didn’t push through. I’d like to know when is the best time to go there and some suggestions on where to stay.
Oh yes, Cochise…i have read so many articles about him back in college days when i was still a student activist..now i began to think why i was drawn to this site….one is my love for Baguio…and maybe…just maybe..we share some common interests.

  6. yeoz says:

is there anyone you know who could help me with something very personal re removing one love?

  7. lisa says:

    Yeoz,

From your heart or from this earth? Actually regardless of your answer, I don’t know anyone who can help you remove one love.

  8. Lalaine Tenorio says:

    Yeoz,
From your heart, only you can solve your problem. Learn to accept and continue living your life. Move on.

…from this earth?…leave it to the Almighty…have faith in Him…

    Good luck and Godbless…
