Haunted Baguio: Spirit Quest at Nevada Square Revisited, Part 2

I do recall that Group 1, the one at the Brew Yard dining area, was talking to some unseen foreigners and hotel guests who were still hanging out in the  Hotel Nevada bar by the lobby, waiting for friends, one of whom was in a clear ‘party mood,’ jovially offering everyone a drink. It seems that Group 1 had the most photos with many orbs that apparently represented supernatural beings, as they kept pointing them out to me later on.

Ah, the wonders of digital photography giving us instant gratification! We really appreciated that old camera as a documentary tool, because we did not have to wait to develop any film. A reminder: although just six years ago, there were very few Digital SLR cameras of that sort in the market at that time. And they were expensive!

Group 3 was most interesting because it seems they came into contact not so much with earthquake victims as with ancestral Cordillera natives — and they had so many demands, and really very specific requests. There was a spirit from Tinglayan (first time I heard of the place) — or was it that the spirit was asking them to contact someone from Tinglayan –  and I actually heard one Questor speaking in what seemed to be a Cordillera dialect, which, as it happened, Dr. Quirino could actually understand and speak, having been assigned to that area for some length of time in the past.

That was truly weird. She said that, as she was speaking, she felt it was all “German” to her but somehow she and Dr. Quirino actually carried on a conversation in the native dialect!

The seances ended mid-afternoon, followed by a debriefing, where the events and conversations were discussed in full detail. Each group identified who they had come into contact with, naming names as much as possible, and giving specific descriptions for those whose names were not revealed to them. They also forwarded the very specific conditions the spirits had given to be able to rest in peace:

1. The earthquake victims demanded a marker honoring the victims in a garden that was supposed to be created within the area, in lieu of a proper burial.

2.  The other spirits wanted a Holy Mass celebrated by two priests who were brothers.

3. The ancestral spirits demanded that a canao be held and specified how much poultry should be offered as sacrifice.

4. In addition, the natives said they wanted no Cordillera tribe to be deemed superior to others.

None of those requests were ever honored by the owners of Nevada Square, although Edna Nevada had a Mass said in their memory immediately after the event. She was not, however, despite best efforts, able to locate priests who were brothers.

Thus ended the daytime activities of Tony Perez and the Spirit Questors at Nevada Square on October 26, 2002.

But, wait, all is not over yet. There was one final activity that had to be held before Nevada Square could be declared “clean,” which will be recounted in:

  1. You really should write a print book soon, dearie…

    Hi Chi,

I would be “finger-tied!” But how sweet of you to think so.

Never aspired to be a writer. you know. My ex-boyfriend, Cochise, who was abducted and murdered in 1990, was one of the more promising writers of his time. I was just thinking, if he were alive, how he would have enjoyed exploring all the different media available today.

Of course, even as a student (he and Butch Dalisay were in the creative writing English program in UP Diliman at the same time) some of his short stories already got published in literary magazines and I remember how excited he was while waiting to see his work in print.

Butch, of course, because he’s WAYYYYY older, and WAYYYYY more talented, already had several awards under his belt by the time he returned to UP to complete his degree.

I, on the other hand, preferred to enroll in English Language subjects, phonology and all that — more detective work than creating. Call it a lack of imagination.

Boy, what a long reply to such a short, albeit complimentary comment! Am in a story-telling mod, you see…

    :)

    Lisa:

Amazing blog! I read that a guy named Cochise was your ex-boyfriend.Was he the one killed in Pampanga? I read the case when I was in law school but I forgot the details. All I remember is that he was a law student.

  4. lisa says:

    Hi Sheryl,

Yes, Cochise was taken to Pampanga and killed there. He and I were classmates, group mates and best buddies in UP Law, too. He was reviewing for the bar when he was abducted. I was to graduate a year later, but never got around to completing my last 17 units. Long story… :)

Thanks for liking the site, hope to see you around. Am about to do a whole series on Sagada, in case folks would find the information useful.

  5. Lalaine Tenorio says:

Hi Lisa, i’ll be waiting for your sagada series. I havn’t been to the place though my husband and I have been making plans to visit for quite some time now but didn’t push through. I’d like to know when is the best time to go there and some suggestions on where to stay.
Oh yes, Cochise…i have read so many articles about him back in college days when i was still a student activist..now i began to think why i was drawn to this site….one is my love for Baguio…and maybe…just maybe..we share some common interests.

  6. yeoz says:

is there anyone you know who could help me with something very personal re removing one love?

  7. lisa says:

    Yeoz,

From your heart or from this earth? Actually regardless of your answer, I don’t know anyone who can help you remove one love.

  8. Lalaine Tenorio says:

    Yeoz,
From your heart, only you can solve your problem. Learn to accept and continue living your life. Move on.

…from this earth?…leave it to the Almighty…have faith in Him…

    Good luck and Godbless…
