Panagbenga 2009 Schedule is Out

For those planning to come up next month for the very popular Panagbenga, please know that I have published the Panagbenga 2009 schedule of events (more events added on 1/17)  in a new Go Baguio! section that is devoted entirely to the annual flower festival, with future info on its history and core events, plus photo and video collections.

There are a few very noticeable differences between this year’s plans and Panagbenga 2008. For one thing, the Grand Parades will be held at the very end of the month. I repeat, the Panagbenga Grand Parades will be held at the end of February 2009!

We usually hold the parades close to the EDSA Revolution celebrations, between the 21st and 25th, always on a weekend and in recent years it has been uncertain whether the President will declare February 25 a special holiday or not, depending on the political winds and her whims, but this is the first time, if I am not mistaken, that there will be a Panagbrngs parade will be held in March! March 1, to be exact, is the date of the much anticipated, much photographed and “let-us-squeeze-ourselves-like-sardines-in-a-can-to-watch” Grand Parade of Floats.

panagbenga-2007-float-1

The Panagbenga 2009 calendar currently contains, yet again, just the tentative schedule of activities, meaning it contains the core events which are the main attractions of the festival (parades, Market Encounter, etc.) and it does not give folks the full story of how many, many other celebrations and events will be held on this occasion.

Actually they released this schedule in mid-October 2008 but I am allergic to the word tentative so I was waiting to see if anything would change. Given that the schedule remains the same in January 2009, I figured it is safe to publish it already.

The very creative Baguio resident community comes up with a host of other events to coincide with the Panagbenga, so honestly there’s really a reason to come up anytime in February, but tourists must make sure they stay until March 1, 2009, unless they prefer to watch the Parade of Floats on television aided by the shallowest commentaries from whomever is assigned by the TV stations. There’s nothing like being on Session Road, crowding with everybody else and complaining about the traffic and the congestion and smelling the flowers up close.

Of course one has a great vantage point of the competition entries from Harrison Road and the Melvin Jones Grandstand on Burnham Park, but the descent on Session Road gives folks a magnificent view of multiple entries because of the slope.

panagbenga-2007-landscaping

I guess, I’ll be updating the Panagbenga 2009 calendar of activities as events are added, and documenting each one as it happens. I have to tell folks at this point though, to make sure to visit the Landscaping Competition (no word as to where it will be held but last year it was on Burnham Park’s Skating Rink) as the entries get better every year! Might give you great ideas for your garden and you can even hire these artists to work on your landscaping for you.

This photo, sent to me by a concerned Baguio resident, shows what the city council really has planned for Burnham Park as part of their "400M development." The skating rink now has walls to accommodate bumper cars. Pinky Rondez, who is in charge of the Parks Committee, publicly promised that Burnham would be a "Green Park" but I guess my friend was just paying lip service to giving residents and visitors much-needed breathing space in what is fast becoming a concrete jungle.

This photo, sent to me by a concerned Baguio resident, shows what the city council really has planned for Burnham Park as part of their "400M development" in line with their paradigm shift from tourism towards "education & commercialism." The skating rink now has walls to accommodate bumper cars. Pinky Rondez, who is in charge of the Parks Committee, publicly promised that Burnham would be a "Green Park" but I guess my friend was just paying lip service to giving residents and visitors much-needed breathing space in what is fast becoming a concrete jungle.

However, I was sent photos of the Skating Rink being walled up to accommodate the bumper car business operator in Camp John Hay (who was probably losing money there so the city decided to give him prime Baguio real estate instead) ! So I will still have to check the specific venues yet for each event. Of course the fluvial floats will be held at the lagoon area of Burnham Park, the parades will go down Session Road, and end in Burnham Park, Market Encounter will probably be held in Burnham Park, too and we are hoping it will not be as controversial this year.

As usual, the invisible half of Baguio Insider who is nimble enough to climb posts and buildings for photographs, Nico Cawed will be there to take more photos. He feels bad, though, that his name does not always appear in the copyright and I watermark them with “Baguio Insider” instead so I really have to tell you guys that a lot of the photo credits for this site go to him, especially the artistic shots.

So to spice up this particular post, I am peppering the article with assorted photos that he took from previous Panagbenga.

Hahaha! Tentative means you cannot plan ahead of time, especially if one is not from Baguio and just squeezing in his/her hectic schedule from work.

Thanks Lisa for the Panagbenga schedule!

  2. lisa says:

Yup, Lalaine, that’s why the word bugs me. I think the events and dates are really already fixed, they just cannot release an official final schedule because they are still collating the mini events.

That’s why I waited a few months before releasing the 2009 Panagbenga schedule, but I kept checking to see if anything changed. I guess it is safe to make firm plans already, especially for the parade dates.

    :)

Thanks for the advance posting of 2009 schedule, will use this to incorporate promotions of our company to our 8 branches out there.

    MABUHAY!!!

Panagbenga here we come.. The thought is making me excited!

My plan is to travel alone (as i always have!- but I’m not a loner=) and find myself walking in Session Road along with the crowd from different places.. To spend a Panagbenga Saturday night just to write about anything in the veranda of my hotel room.. Enjoy the morning sun while eating breakfast at Forrest House.. Go to JOhn Hay, find my favorite Pine and write some more.. Stroll anywhere while I enjoy the view..

I’m ecstatic about this “trip for myself” (that’s the way I call it everytime I go to Baguio alone) but I think I’m not going alone this time.. My plans changed coz my team’s going with me! This is making me more than excited! We’re going on Feburary 28-morning right after our shift to enjoy the last weekend of Panagbenga!

    Ei Lisa,
I read you articles, and i love them. Will surely visit this site again.. Anything about Baguio, just anything about the place makes me always want to go there again and again..

Will check out for more Panagbenga updates.

    Kat

  5. lisa says:

Noel, thanks for promoting the Panagbenga. It would be great if folks arrived the day before as the first parade is usually held in the morning of Saturday, so they can watch both.

Kat! This shou;d be fun. If you’re with a group, it makes walking to places seem faster, too. And you know your Panagbenga. Travel should be planned for February 28, really.

  6. ghad says:

The last time I saw the parades (or was in Baguio during Panagbenga, for that matter) was back in 2002. Now, I recently bought my plane tickets and I am so glad that I planned to arrive on Friday, 2.27, so that I can watch the Saturday parade!

After reading around the web about how the previous events were these years past, I do hope that I will get to experience one of the “better” Panagbenga’s – zero politics, non-commercialized (I can dream, can’t I?) and simply just about having fun.

I can’t wait! I’m counting down the days… See you all at the parades!

    “Agawidak manen, Baguio!”

  7. eltee says:

We are to go up in baguio this coming MArch ( hectic schedules) I am not really into the panagbenga for I know baguio will really be in blast then. However, in the 2009 schedule you have provided, what do you mean by the event from March 02-07 as “session in bloom”? I have never thought Panagbenga activities will end up in March already for as always every February. So I am just amazed I still have something to catch when we go there. thansk for an answer.

  8. lisa says:

Session in Bloom is a hugely popular street festival with food and retail stores set in the middle of Session Road. This is an occasion where one will see virtually all the residents of the city in one place. Usually held during weekdays, Session Road in Bloom does not see as many tourists but it is a fun event (causes traffic snarls, but a whole lot of fun!)

  9. restyrefuerzo says:

Of all the Panagbenga activities, Session in Bloom is the one I look most forward to. :)

  10. Sesil Morris says:

We went to Panagbenga 2008 and stayed in Magsaysay Ave. By the time we got to session road the parade had almost begun. The streets were packed with people and it was drizzling. We ended up watching the parade from the pedestrian overpass peeking in between people’s heads. The floats were really beautiful and very festive. I just wished we could see them closer. So we were thinking, this time we would like to stay in a hotel along the parade route, if possible. Can you give me the street names that the parade will take. I am thinking of booking in Hotel Veniz. Is that on the parade route? Thanks for your help.

  11. lisa says:

    Yup Resty,

Session Road in Bloom is an activity for the residents (but I get paranoid about people jostling me on the first day or two so I go towards the end). The parades are my favorite except when the politicians use it on election year to promote themselves. The next time they throw candies to the crowd, the crowd should throw something right back at them. But that’s Panagbenga 2010.

The Parade Route will take Session Road, left on Magsaysay, left to Harrison Road until the Melvin Jones Grandstand on Burnham Park.

    Hi Sesil,

It is best to arrive in Baguio the day before because parade days cause traffic snarls. Start walking to your vantage point a few hours before. Hotel Veniz is a good place to stay for this purpose but make sure you arrive ahead of time because it will be virtually impossible to get to once the city starts rerouting traffic and you will not want to watch the parade carrying all your luggage.

Magsaysay is always subject to a lot of traffic even on regular days. The Legarda Road area is a good place for lodging because you can get to your hotel even after the parades have started and yet the Baguio hotels there are near Burnham Park.

The Leonard Wood area is okay, too, because there are many access routes to get to your lodging and the distance to the parade routes will take just a 1km-1.5km walk.

Folks have to remember, with the Panagbenga, there will be a lot of walking entailed.

  13. Sesil says:

Thanks, Lisa. We plan to get to Baguio on Friday, 27th. We learned from last year. We bought advanced tickets for the 2am Victory bus (we would have wanted an earlier trip but we were told no more earlier times available). We thought that should still get us there in time for the Saturday parade. Wrong! We got to the bus terminal with plenty of time to spare before our bus was scheduled to leave. The terminal was full of people and no buses! To make a long story short, we were able to get in a bus at 6am! Of course, We missed the Grand parade. I hope Victory Liner gets their act together this year. I would not want to repeat that experience.

We would like to find a hotel where we can watch the parade from the comfort of our room. Is there such a place?

Panagbenga is also pickpocket & thieves’s heaven, we were warned.

  14. lisa says:

    Hi Sesil,

My experience with Victory Liner is that their buses always leave on time. How funny that you were holding tickets for 2 am and there was no bus available. That was very unprofessional.

Prime Hotel and Veniz are on the parade route and some of their hotel rooms may have a view, but not all, so make sure you get one that does if you prefer to watch the parades from there.

Oh yes, like all the top festivals in the world, the Panagbenga attracts all kinds of visitors, even those who prey on other visitors. The pickpockets come from everywhere in the Philippines (I hope you do not think that the city breeds them — a lot of them come up by bus knowing the size of the crowds) so please secure your belongings by leaving them in your hotel room/safe/front desk or keeping them in front of you.

Have a great time at the flower festival!

  15. kristine says:

hi, lisa.. is the fluvial parade not the same as the grand parade? i was wondering because the fluvial parade is set on february 4, but u said the grand parade is on march 1. thanks!

  16. lisa says:

    Hi Kristine,

Thanks for asking because lots of folks get confused with “fluvial” and “float” as both invoke the image for water and well, floating.

The Fluvial Parade is a showcase of boats decked with flowers at the Burnham Park Lagoon, while the Grand Parades on February 28 and March 1 will feature streetdancing, band and floral floats going down Session Road, Harrison Road and ending in Burnham Park.

Since they’re spaced far apart, there’s an excuse to come to Baguio at the beginning of February and at the end, wouldn’t you say?! Think about it :)

  17. kristine says:

that’s very informative, thank u.. guess i’ll just have to take trips to and fro.. got work and class during weekdays..

anyway, u’ve a very nice site here. it helps a lot.

  18. Merphix says:

Hi Lisa, I saw your blog from way way back and I have to say that your site now contains more content :)

Anyways just wanted to know if you know anybody from BFFFI cause I sent them an email about our group,Photographers, hoping to participate in the 2 day Grand Parade and be able to shoot beyond the cordon area :) but haven’t really receive any respond yet. It would be a great help if you know the work around :) thanks

  19. lisa says:

    Hi Merphix,

You probably first visited when I just started blogging to complement Go Baguio!, my main site, which has always been more organized, authoritative and is richer in content. Here I try to publish more specific information about actual personal experiences. For example, Balatoc Mines & Crosby Park has always been featured there but here I tell folks about actually having experienced the underground mines tour. And then there are, of course, current issues that must be discussed that have no place in a travel website. :)

For more information please contact The BFFFI Secretariat directly at their office at the Baguio Convention Center, or call them at these telephones (074) 442 – 4315 / 442 – 4259 or email at panagbenga.secretariat@gmail.com (is this the email address you used?). Hope this helps.

  20. Merphix says:

Well I used that Email address anyways thanks for the info I’ll try to call them once I go back to Baguio if my work permits hehehe

  21. lisa says:

Hi again Merphix, try giving them a call on the land line.

I am sure their inbox is full and they are hard put to respond to every request these days since the Grand Opening of the Panagbenga is just a few days away. :)

  22. Cyrus says:

Ive been doing floats since 1999, greenwich purefoods and chowking are some of our friend-clients, float construction is a weeklong tiring activity but very very rewarding and the parade day is always exciting. VIVA PANAGBENGA!!!

    See you folks!

  23. lisa says:

    Welcome Cyrus!

Glad to know one of the creative folks behind those beautiful floats. The Panagbenga floats just get more and more beautiful every year. Congratulations!

    Hi Lisa,

Chrisna has revisions and updates on the Panagbenga 2009 schedule, where can she e-mail you?

  27. lisa says:

Hey, Arwin, I’d appreciate that. My email is creativenative(at)gmail(dot)com. Wrote it this way to throw off the spambots. :)

The Panagbenga 2009 Calendar is on it’s 3rd revision — SO FAR — with the latest email coming from Eric Pangilinan of the BFFFI Secretariat last Jan 12. These guys are much more responsive this year, by the way…

  28. Wil says:

Hi, I’m an amateur photographer and I just wanted to ask if you know where I can get or apply for a press pass to shoot the Panagbenga events up close.

    Thanks

  29. lisa says:

    Hi Wil,

You’ll have to contact the Panagbenga Secretariat for this. Their contact information included in the article. :)

  30. Wil says:

Oops. Part blind, part stupid. Thanks again. :)

  31. lisa says:

Hi Will, and no you are not.

As it turns out the BFFFI Secretariat info in in the comments section not within the post, so I just added it there, thanks to you.

Even I got confused because I did make it a point to display the information prominently at the Panagbenga 2009 Calendar at Go Baguio! That’s the trouble with maintaining several sites, I suppose.

    :)

  32. Len says:

hi Ms. Lisa, thanks for the response.

Hi Lisa, just too bad that the city allowed the amusement center in the skating rink in Burnham. Very ideal place to hold the landscape exhibition and other activities. Now no longer. :(

  34. lisa says:

Here, Resty, is a photo I took of the Landscaping competition last year at the skating rink.

    Panagbenga 2008 Lanscaping Contest

Honestly, this was my favorite part of Panagbenga 2008. Pity the local government is behaving as if the city is so poor that they had to close up the skating rink and put bumper cars. If Baguio did not have bumper cars, it would not be diminished.

  38. Hilda Barry says:

hi lisa are u from baguio?

  39. lisa says:

    Hi Hilda,

Born Manila 1964, First trip to Baguio 1969, constant visitor until 1991, operated Halfway House at Camp John Hay 1991-1997, lived here permanently beginning 1997.

Nope I am not from Baguio but I have known it and loved it for 40 years.

You can read more about me here :)

  40. Jerrick says:

    Thanks for the schedule.

I hope I could buy some time to be back in Baguio and I intend to time it with this year’s Panagbenga. I haven’t been there for quite some time. I’m a graduate of Architecture in Saint Louis back in 2003. Working here in Manila has been routinary. A lot of Louisians work here but we say Baguio is incomparable!

Regarding the skating rink, I would like people to look into a more large-scale deterioration of Baguio’s landscape – the allowing of Massive Structure of SM right on top of Session Road. They could have introduced organic architecture. Putting up commercial complex is still attainable with respect to the locality but bear in mind the environment it will blend with – Aesthetic Functionalism that is. Not to mention the pine trees they cut, even those with markings that should have been retained.

Just my personal point of view.

  41. lisa says:

    Oh Jerrick,

Can you imagine what the city and SM have planned for the Baguio Convention Center, especially those hundreds of trees on the lot beside it that they were planning to cut to build a convention hotel?

Yes, Baguio has been degraded, both through the tastelessness and/or insensitivity of the owners of structures but also because of the apathy and/or helplessness of the residents. There are only very few people here who are willing to take personal risks, or who are willing to spend, to keep Baguio beautiful.

We need more folks to take active roles in bringing back the city we love! Come back na and make a difference!

  42. lisa says:

  43. glads says:

Wow Panagbenga here we go again!!! The thought just makes me excited! I will surely take a time off from work just to watch the parade! I would have to agree with Jerrick, “Baguio is incomparable!”.. I also work here in Makati for an American Bank. A lot of Louisians work here too..

The first time I’ve ever watched the flower fest was back in 2006, that was my first year in college and I never missed any parade after watching it the first time! After college, I had to go back to Manila to get a job (because I could not find any job in Baguio, unfortunately..) but every year I would go back to Baguio for Panagbenga. I think I just left my heart in Baguio and that’s what keeps me from coming back..

  44. Nestor says:

    Hi there!!

Thanks for the schedule you posted in your account.I plan to go up on the 14th (feb 14), what are the things I will be seing on this date? I attended the street parade last year but was not able to attend the fluvial parade. I just want to catch Fluvial Parade, on the 14th, is this the one? What about on March 1? I do wanted to go up on the 14th, probably on the 13th i will be there in preparation for it. 14th is a very special date, but I love photography, so maybe I can catch up later “for the love month.” I just want to know what will I see there because I really want to catch the fluvial parade. Hope you can give me some hint to really make up my mind, if not I will re-schedule to come on the 28th instead.

  45. lisa says:

    Hi Glads,

Of course you left your heart in Baguio! That’s why this place is so special. The good news is, the City of Pines is really jsut a bus ride away from Manila so enjoy your Panagbenga!

    Hi Nestor,

It depends on who you’re coming up with. If it’s with a special girl, of course Baguio is a wonderful place to have someone snuggling up to you on Valentine’s Day! If you click the links to the Panagbenga schedules you will find that there are other activities around the city on those days.

And then, two weeks later — the Parades, a feast for photographers! How can you miss it?!

Usually, when I cannot choose betweem two things, I end up taking them both!

  46. glads says:

I love the place! And if ever I would be able to find a good job there in Baguio, I will definitely stay there for good!

  47. Maricel says:

It’s nice to know the sked of panagbenga in advance coz for my relatives & friends who would be coming up for the celebration they could plan their vacation and the sepcific days they are to be here. Thanks even though I’m from here, I got the sked from you.

  48. carmine says:

thanks for an early schedule for panagbenga..
i’ve a question.. what and where will the fluvial parade on feb 14 be?
    thanks!

  49. Nestor says:

Thanks for the reply!!! Whew!! I just can’t make my mind yet but I already filed my leave of absence on the 13th. Unfortunately, I’m a looner, so I will be coming all alone. hahaha!!I think I want to grab the 14th because the 28th and March 1 will be swarming with vacationers. I hope the 14th will fulfill what my expectations are….I just hope…..I just don’t want to miss all the fun but I have to choose just one, and maybe next year, just maybe, there will be more things to consider and all that…. I am working here in Manila, that’s why. Thanks for all of these….

  50. sai says:

were about to go to baguio for the first time on feb 28 till marh 3, and and its so hard to find for a good place for two… i hope we could still come and visit baguio…

  51. Jerrick says:

    Hi again, Lisa!

How I wish it’s that easy to go back there. But I think Glads and I share the same predicament. Had Baguio been abundant of good job with good remuneration, I won’t compel myself here in Manila (Glads, thanks for agreeing with me. By the way, I work in Makati too). I think it’s a global scenario – like Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson have to move to New York to find a good job.

Anyway, I miss Baguio a lot – the people, lifestyle, and the thought of being close to nature was never second best. I miss the morning mists while rushing to school. Life in Baguio is so simple!. But much of these bliss will not last long if we do not do our part to preserve what’s left of it.

Lisa, thanks for this site. Good job!

  52. lisa says:

    Glads & Jerrick,

The problem with Baguio is that it graduates tens of thousands per year who will not find jobs here. Because the city was not MEANT to be a place for studying, just a place for visiting.

The best anyone can do to help would be to stay abreast of current developments, keep an eye out for opportunities. This is not a place for personal or career development, even if our politicians who own schools insist on building factories or calls centers. Neither of those examples will make Baguio a better place, actually, just cause more people to seek their fortunes here.

Unless you own rights to mines or own diploma mills, there’s no getting rich here, sorry. But if you are an artist, the place and surrounding areas can be inspiring.

Work hard, “retire” early like I did, go into business for yourself to survive. But that takes time and a sense of purpose that you must recognize early on — otherwise living here will be just a dream. :)

    Maricel,

It’s funny how I get a similar comment from other persons, about living here and hearing it from Baguio Insider — because for some it’s easier to focus their search on the web, than to wait for the weekly papers and sift through all those pages of small type. :)

    Hi Carmine & Nestor,

The fluvial parade is to be held on Burnham Lake, with the boats dressed up with flowers — it is of course not as grand or well visited as the Grand Parades at month’s end, but one can join all the Valentine’s celebrations of the city without all the crowds. :)

    Sai,

I’ sure you can still find a small inn or transient house to stay in. Never mind how far it’ll be from the city center. There will be A LOT of walking involved for everyone. Hahaha!

To all who have commented thus far,

The Panagbenga like Baguio can be as relaxing or as exciting as you want it to be — it’s as much fun for me to visit the landscape exhibits as to go with the crowds for the big parades. So please keep checking the schedules because as new events are released.

    :)

  57. lisa says:

    Hey Harold,

Best way to enjoy both parades is to travel Friday night, get some sleep on the bus, and go straight to the parades. If you are bringing a lot of stuff, ask your hotel if you can check in early (there may be an extra fee, but you it’s worth the peace of mind and the security).

    Igocanada,

When will you be able to take time off to visit? Hopefully, it’ll be soon!

    Glads,

How nice it is when schoolmates are able to meet up. So you know Jerrick?

I notice that I get to meet up with my Baguio friends who have moved to Manila, in Manila, too. It’s a cool little cliquish club of intimate friends — that’s what happens when one spends a lot of years together in the close quarters that Baguio is.

Thanks for dropping by and commenting, guys! :)

    Hi Japot,

I do not know why that event was canceled. What I see as a problem with the Panagbenga is these days is that it is just a collection of self-funded events that have been parceled out to different folks who find their own sponsors, do the logistics and run the events as they wish, like the Market Encounter, which has become uglier and uglier as the years have gone by. So best to ask the Secretariat why it was canceled, I guess.

    Hi Mich,

If you’ll be alone, try to take photos of the entries from Burnham Park or Harrison Road as they arrive. Although if you get a good vantage point from Session Road — great! Take good care of yourself. If you want some young folks to take you around, I tell them to contact you.

  65. lisa says:

    Hi Mich,

No prob. I just wasn’t able to log on for a few days (rare for me) — long story.

  66. it’s beautiful and nice

    Hi Lisa,

We will be visiting Baguio just in time for the Grand Float Parade this Sunday (Mar. 1). What time will the parade start and approximately for how long will it last? I’m trying to create our itinerary for our two-day Baguio vacation. Thanks!

    Dex

  68. lisa says:

    Hi Dex,

Hahaha, the Parade starts at around 8 but folks start walking to get a good vantage point at 6m, so plan to do a lot of walking, and the Float Parade lasts till around noon time but getting out of there is a whole different story, too. So, in general, allot all the whole morning till after lunch for this purpose. Then somehow, a lot of spectators decide to head for Camp John Hay afterward.

For the record, the Parade of Floats, though is faster than the Street Dancing Parade because there’s a lot of choreography happening for the latter, while the former is just flower-covered vehicles moving down.
