“I’d rather have a meaningful death than live a meaningless life” — Corazon C. Aquino, 1933-2009

In 1983, Cochise Bernabe, who was from Pasay, called me to say that Ninoy Aquino was killed in the Manila International Airport (later this was renamed the Ninoy Aquino International Airport) a few minutes after the assassination.  I knocked on my mom’s door and said nonchalantly, “Oh, by the way Ninoy Aquino is dead…”

My mom wailed, and said later that she had the same reaction to the John F. Kennedy Assassination.

Tonight, as we were watching Sandra Bullock’s new movie, she casually turned to me and said, “Oh, by the way Cory Aquino has died…”

And I did not expect the flood of tears that came pouring down my face.
